Chapter 01
Adobe was never going to take a duct chase
A stud-frame house has cavities built in for exactly this purpose. Adobe and pueblo revival construction doesn't. The walls are solid, load-bearing mass, and there's no chase, no soffit and nowhere for a trunk line to run without cutting into something that took real skill to build in the first place. That's the whole reason ductless took hold in Santa Fe long before it was fashionable anywhere else, and it's the reason Ductless Air System Services make up as much of our calendar as they do.
The idea is simple even where the install isn't: a compact head mounts on the wall of the room you actually use, and the only thing that passes through the wall is a small insulated line set carrying refrigerant, power and a condensate drain. One penetration instead of a network of ducts, and it can go in a house that's stood for a century without touching the structure that's kept it standing.

Placement matters as much as the equipment. A head hung in the wrong spot on an exposed vigas ceiling or a hand-plastered wall reads as an afterthought forever, so we plan for that before anyone drills. The outdoor unit gets sited off the ground on its own plinth, clear of drip lines and chamisa, and positioned with an eye toward what's visible from the street, since several Santa Fe neighborhoods carry design review with real opinions on that.
Compliance with local building codes and perfect placement in local architecture aren't extras here, they're the baseline. A ductless system installed without accounting for either one ends up as a callback, and we'd rather get it right the first time than come back and move it.
Chapter 03
One head, or several, depending on how the house is actually used
Some houses need a single zone: one bedroom that never cools down, one addition the original system never reached. Others get a multi-zone setup covering several rooms off one outdoor condenser, which lets each room run its own temperature instead of one thermostat guessing for the whole house. We size the number of zones and the equipment to how you actually live in the space, not to a standard package.
It's also a heating solution, not just a cooling one. A heat pump head handles both directions, which matters in a town where the swing between a warm afternoon and a cold night can be forty degrees on the same day.
