What actually gets checked in a pre-season heating inspection

Every fall we get calls from people who waited until the first genuinely cold night to turn their heat on, only to find out it doesn't work, or doesn't work well. Most of what we find on those emergency calls is something that would have shown up in a routine pre-season check weeks earlier, when there was time to schedule a repair calmly instead of shivering through it. Here's what a real heating inspection actually looks at, so it stops being a mystery box you're paying for.

The combustion side, if you have a gas furnace or boiler

A technician checks the burner flame for the right color and shape, since a lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one usually means the fuel-to-air mixture is off, which wastes energy and can produce more carbon monoxide than it should. The heat exchanger gets inspected for cracks, which matters because a cracked heat exchanger can let combustion byproducts leak into the air the blower is circulating through your house. Venting gets checked to make sure exhaust gases are actually leaving the building instead of backdrafting. None of this is visible from the thermostat, which is exactly why it needs a hands-on inspection rather than a guess based on whether the house feels warm.

Static pressure, explained without the jargon

Static pressure comes up a lot in HVAC conversations and rarely gets explained well. Here's the plain version: your blower fan is designed to push a certain amount of air against a certain amount of resistance from the ductwork, filters, and vents it's moving air through. Static pressure is a measurement of how much resistance the system is actually working against. When it's too high, usually from a clogged filter, undersized ductwork, or too many closed vents, the blower has to work harder to move the same amount of air, which strains the motor, reduces airflow to rooms, and can shorten the life of the whole system.

A technician measures static pressure with a manometer at specific points in the duct system, compares the reading against what the equipment is rated for, and can usually tell from that single number whether the system is breathing freely or fighting itself. It's one of the more useful diagnostic numbers in the whole checkup, and it's also one most homeowners have never heard measured on their own system.
